2015 Cool and Warm Season Forage Field Trials NDSU Carrington
Sorghum-Sudangrass BMR
Annual warm season sorghum-sudangrass hybrid with Brown Mid Rib trait, making it sweeter and more palatable with about 5% more energy, but is also about 5% less productive than conventional sorghum sudan. Good for reducing erosion and soil compaction, increasing organic matter, redistributing nutrients in soil, suppresses weeds, mycorrhizal fungi association, fair salt and frost tolerance. This is a high user of nitrogen so it is helpful to use a small amount of fertilizer when seeding as a single species. Hard to dry down for baling, so best if chopped or grazed. Identified by brown streak running through the middle of the leaf. Can produce prussic acid, so a full 7-14 day dry down after first frost is recommended.
Recommended seeding rate of 20 pounds per acre. 1/2 to 1 and 1/2 inch seeding depth.
